Christmas Turkey

1 pound of turkey per person

Tasha kept the fireplace going all winter, so every morning there were coals on the hearth. She put the turkey in the tin kitchen early on Christmas, and by the time everyone gathered for dinner the house smelled of mashed potatoes, gravy, sugar cookies, fresh bread, and roast turkey. The strings of balsam branches around the doorway and the wreath with the red bow smelled wonderful, candlelight gleamed in the copperware over the cookstove, corgis ran about barking, and the frequent ring of the telephone from acquaintances calling to say Merry Christmas was part of the scene. The most memorable sound, though, was the click of the entry door latch, because as soon as you put your hand on it, the door opened into this world. It would be hard to overstate Tasha’s enthusiasm and energy for this time of year, and it was always wonderful to celebrate Christmas with her in her home.
